Resource RoundUp – June 2012

Throughout the course of our Women’s Saving Club meetings, we have many random resources that get brought to the table. Here’s a recap of all the things that are inspiring us, teaching us, or are just plain fun — whether they have to do with money or not.

Liz’s has borrowed Amanda’s book, How to Train a Wild Elephant: And other Adventures in Mindfulness, and has started a weekly practice of becoming more mindful in her life. Her awesome idea was to put a little one-word reminder of the mindfulness exercise on her vanity mirror to help keep her focused.

Another suggested resource: The Fire Starter Sessions: A Soulful + Practical Guide to Creating Success on Your Own Terms. From Amazon.com: “Life balance is a myth, and the pursuit of it is causing us more stress than the craving for balance itself.”

A side discussion on “what caused the mortgage crisis again?” led us to this book, which we’ll now be passing around. The Big Short by Michael Lewis.

And…girls, I’m sorry, but I guess we can’t be Wonder Woman. Why Women Still Can’t Have It All. But I suppose boys can’t be Superman, either. Counter article: Men Can’t Have It All, Either.

Which makes us need a drink. Our favorite libation of the evening? Lobster Reef Sauvignon Blanc.

It’s Money Smart Colorado Week!

Did you know there is a week dedicated to financial education in Colorado?   Since we’re Colorado gals, a shout out to Money Smart Colorado and Colorado Jump$tart for these fun (and FREE) classes.

From the Money Smart Colorado website:

Money Smart Colorado is a public awareness campaign designed to help consumers better manage their personal finances. This is achieved through the collaboration and coordinated effort of organizations across the state including businesses, financial institutions, schools, libraries, not-for-profits, government agencies and the media. These partners come together once a year to stress the importance of financial literacy, inform consumers where they can get help, and provide free educational seminars and activities throughout the week.  [Read more...]

Crowdfunding Round-Up

I’ve been interested lately in the idea of crowdfunding.   This idea describes a project or idea that is funded by a large number of people or crowd.  You may have heard of Kickstarter or LendingClub – both crowdfunding in different ways.

I’ve pulled some interesting articles if you want to take a look at what’s happening in the crowdfunding world.  You may see it as a way to develop passive income (a la Lending Club – loaning money to individuals with interest) or it may be interesting because of the potential for small business growth worldwide.  Happy Friday, Savers.

Gen X Women Closing the Investing Gap?

A recent article from US News and World Report highlights some of the gains Gen X women are making in the investing world. It says that in many cases, these women, born between 1965 and 1976 (or even 1981 to be a “young gen-xer) have more access and are investing more than their mothers.

Ladies, where do you stand on investing/saving/retirement? Are you saving more than your parents? Do you feel like you have the access you need to investing and saving vehicles?

401K matches being restored

Does your company still match your 401K contribution? Or is your company one of the 75 percent of companies who recently restored matches?

If you’re not currently being matched, have you thought about asking for this benefit during your next review process?

Ahead of our time

DailyWorth today talked about the perils of talking about money with your friends. I added our commentary — we’re so ahead of the game, girls!

Scammy credit cards

A thank you to Ramit and his readers for finding this gem online.  Lessons: 1. Always read ads, even the small print.  2. If you buy something, do you REALLY want to pay for it later, after it’s old, worn out and you’re still paying for it?  3. Pay off debt. 4.  Start saving so you don’t need credit cards.
