Resource RoundUp – June 2012

Throughout the course of our Women’s Saving Club meetings, we have many random resources that get brought to the table. Here’s a recap of all the things that are inspiring us, teaching us, or are just plain fun — whether they have to do with money or not.

Liz’s has borrowed Amanda’s book, How to Train a Wild Elephant: And other Adventures in Mindfulness, and has started a weekly practice of becoming more mindful in her life. Her awesome idea was to put a little one-word reminder of the mindfulness exercise on her vanity mirror to help keep her focused.

Another suggested resource: The Fire Starter Sessions: A Soulful + Practical Guide to Creating Success on Your Own Terms. From Amazon.com: “Life balance is a myth, and the pursuit of it is causing us more stress than the craving for balance itself.”

A side discussion on “what caused the mortgage crisis again?” led us to this book, which we’ll now be passing around. The Big Short by Michael Lewis.

And…girls, I’m sorry, but I guess we can’t be Wonder Woman. Why Women Still Can’t Have It All. But I suppose boys can’t be Superman, either. Counter article: Men Can’t Have It All, Either.

Which makes us need a drink. Our favorite libation of the evening? Lobster Reef Sauvignon Blanc.

Money and Budgeting Apps

CNN has an article today about the best budgeting and banking apps.  I hadn’t heard of 3 of the 6 they mention which means I really ought to check them out.  Some of my favorites though are the SmartyPig app where you can add money through your phone to your savings goals (or friends) and ShopSavvy which allows you to comparison shop through your phone by scanning the bar code.  Neat.

What are your favorite money apps?

Lifetime of Debt

I came across this great graphic from creditloan.com about the Lifetime of Debt for Average Americans.

Yikes moments:

* The average American will pay over $600,000 in interest over the course of their lifetime.

* The average credit card balance is over $10,000.

So what are you doing to get out of debt? Last month’s Saving Club challenge was to sell something.  Have you? Did you host a garage sale? Sell some collectibles on ebay?

How to Track Your Club’s Goals

Helping keep each other accountable to the goals we set is one of the benefits of Women’s Saving Club. While each individual is responsible for tracking their own progress, it’s good to have an overview of everyone’s goals. That way, at the end of the year, we can look at it and say, “Wow! Look at all the great things Women’s Saving Club has helped us accomplish.”

A simple spreadsheet seems to do the trick.

Travel Round-Up

It’s nearly summer which means SUMMER VACATIONS!!! And to celebrate, I wanted to share a few tips and websites I’ve found to help you save and plan for future travel.

The Globe and Mail – Travel tips from readers

View from the Wing – Great ideas, tricks and tips on how to collect points and miles for travel

FlyerTalk – A forum and community for frequent fliers

BudgetTravel – My favorite magazine and website for deals and ideas for the budget traveller

Where are you going this summer? Are you paying in cash or collecting points to save on your trip?

Are you Billionaire-Smart?

I came across this quiz from GoBankingRates.com and thought I’d share with our readers who are all smart, savvy women (and men).  And since it’s still Financial Literacy Month, let’s take a minute to test our knowledge.

For the record, I got an 83 percent.  Good thing I’m in a saving club so I can keep learning.

Getting Over Feeling Guilty about Money

After more than a year of doing killer money management, us Women’s Saving Club ladies have fallen into what appears to be a money funk.

At our April club meeting earlier this week, many of us had confessions along the lines of a late credit card payment, tucking away unread refinancing statements, using the credit card that didn’t have the maximum reward points…

Are we reverting to our old habits? Slacking off from being so vigilant? Simply taking a break? [Read more...]
